Dr. Styx watches through a crystal ball as four people begin a seance. Styx recognizes the vicious “other world denizen” they have contacted and decides to protect them. The spirit entices the members of the seance to commit suicide. After one jumps from a window to her death, Styx intercedes. While the shadow of the devil falls on the city and a murder is committed, Styx and the spirit engage in a magical battle of will. Styx calls the still earthbound, newly-dead to his cause, encouraging a “righteous disbelief” in the spirit, to “unbelieve him out of existence.” At daybreak, the spirit admits defeat, returns the victims of that night to life, and retreats into the sewer.
