Young Bobby Wilson, thinking about his father, a pilot of a P-47 who died in the war, muses about flying. He hears a voice tell him he can fly. He sees a dog about to be run over by a firetruck. Turning invisible, he flies out of the second-story window of his house and snatches up the canine. The ghost of Bobby’s father appears, guiding him to incidents where Bobby can help. People notice the actions and results of the unseen entity, and Bobby is soon dubbed “The Saving Spirit” in the press. While hiking with friends, one friend falls off a cliff into a river below. Bobby tries to reveal his ability to his friends, despite warnings by the ghost of his father to never do so. He dives off the cliff. His father shows up one last time, telling his son that the powers will fail him for revealing the secret. Bobby dies in the river. The Saving Spirit can fly and is invisible to all natural observers. The ghost of his father guides him to places where he is needed.
