Vince Harley was a crime fiction writer looking for information on the perfect crime plot because his stories had gotten stale. While at home, relaxing and tending to his bees, Harley was surprised by a woman at his door, Judy Graves, who collapsed from exhaustion after being chased. Harley searched for clues about her, finding valuable jewels in her pocket book. Tired himself, he fell asleep in a chair nearby, and was awakened by gangster Jake Mallon asking him the whereabouts of the girl. Feigning ignorance, he was roughed up by Mallon’s thugs and knocked out. Mallon decided to kill Harley by letting his bees sting him to death. The thugs poured the bugs onto his body and left. Judy Graves, hiding in a closet, was amazed to witness the bees do no harm to Harley, but simply return to their apiary. It turns out “he is one of those rare people that bees don’t sting”. Inspired by his ordeal, Harley donned a costume similar to a yellow jacket, and confronted Mallon and his men, sending Graves to the police. At the gangsters hideout, Yellowjacket defeated the criminals and escaped, just as Graves brought the authorities to apprehend the mobsters. As it turned out, Harley had the ability to control swarms of bees. Harley’s costume and name must refer only to color, however, because yellowjackets are actually in the wasp classification. Harley had a nephew, Yellowjacket Jr., though the two never met in a story.
