Jim Kendall lost his family when their plane was hijacked and then crashed. He managed to survive, but lost the ability to smile thanks to damage to his facial muscles. To honor the memories of his wife and daughter, Jim decided to become the crime fighter called the Scarlet Avenger. He had no powers, but he was an expert in jujitsu and a skilled inventor. He created a bulletproof cloak, a hypnosis device, a magnetic ray, and a paralysis ray to help him in his war against crime. He also had a rocket car and aircraft for transport. Like many heroes, Scarlet Avenger left a calling card emblazoned with a flaming arrow. He battled enemies such as Texa, Peanut-Head, and Mr. Nimbus, with assistance from his agents, which included Operator #12 and Operator #1, who was really Inez Courtney.
