Alan Bidell was a rich young man, an All-American fullback, and a champion archer. He was very self-centered and rude. He dreamt that one of his ancestors instructed him to make something of himself, to fight crime wearing the outfit of a cavalier. When he woke, he was introduced to his girlfriend Roxanne’s English uncle, whom Bidell believed was a fake. Insulted, Roxanne accepted a marriage proposal from Rich Crouchly, Bidell’s cousin. While lecturing him on his decisions, Bidell’s grandfather found a threatening letter from the Jingle Man. Bidell dons his ancestor’s clothes to try to catch the criminal, a murderer who kills with ironic objects associated with the victim’s occupation, before he strikes again. Bidell discovers that the Jingle Man is Roxanne’s uncle. The Jingle Man sends a poisonous snake in a package to kill Bidell’s grandfather, a chemist. As the Scarlet Arrow, Bidell shoots through the box, killing the snake before his grandfather even sees it. Scarlet Arrow then goes to protect Crouchly, the Jingle Man’s next target, but finds that Crouchly not only disguised himself as Roxanne uncle, but that he was the Jingle Man, creating the identity to throw the police off his trail. Scarlet Arrow pins Crouchly to a wall with his arrows, and leaves him to the police. Roxanne figures out that Bidell must be Scarlet Arrow.
