Claude Frimas, journalist, attends a session organized by Professor Lefort at the Maison de la Chimie, where Professor Lefort captures the light of the stars, in this case that of the Moon, and transforms these light waves into sound waves. A chant rises from a mysterious box, a ray of moonlight making its way to the stage, a deep then quickly high-pitched sound. The vibration of a projectile is heard and Professor Lefort collapses. Immediately the light is restored and the professor is taken to an adjacent room, where a dart is discovered in his neck, the tip of which coated with deadly poison. A detective story follows, in which Frimas attempts to better understand the victim and uncover the murderer. Along with Frimas, characters include Jacques Couvrigny, Claire Duperrier (ward and fiancée of Lefort), André Maillane (Lefort’s assistant), Maître Vallon (lawyer), Raymonde (an energetic and outgoing woman), and Sigismond Bricard.
