Dean Alder, the head of the Alder Academy, wanted to fight crime and instruct the young. Thanks to the Mystic Garment, a magic robe he wears, he can walk into and out of mirrors and gain powers. When he walks through a mirror, he becomes an intangible and invisible shadow. He uses these power to fight evildoers. His costume changes over time. In vol. 7 #1, from 1942, he stops wearing a costume or using his powers, and is sent on a spy mission to Nazi-occupied Malmo on the Baltic Sea. His further adventures are centered on espionage during WWII.
