The unique sensibility of Frank Thomas graced comic book pages for only four brief years, 1939 to 1943. A complete cartoonist, he created, wrote, and drew features in the emerging and yet-to-be-formularized superhero and funny-animal ganres. Cartoony, clean lines characterized his inimitable style, which often injected humorous overtones into an otherwise straight narrative, an approach that typified later successes like Captain Marvel, The Spirit, and Plastic Man (though many Quality-published, and other, postwar superheoes shared this tongue-in-cheekiness). Other complete cartoonists who created, wrote, and drew their own comic book features — Will Eisner, Jack Cole, Fletcher Hanks, Basil Wolverton, Carl Barks, Walt Kelly, Boody Rogers, and Harvey Kurtzman, and a few others — are among the most celebrated comics creators ever. ~ Frank Thomas Archives Volume 1: The Centaur Years – Digital Comics Museum
