Tom Smith is a colonist, assisting a group of settlers on the planet Pharisee. While examining the planet, Smith and the leader of the colonial expedition see a “piranosaur” killing a “winky”. Tom shoots the piranosaur and adopts the winky, named based on the rodentish creature’s rapid eye-blinking. The settlers adopt the voluminous winkies as beloved pets. The son of the leader defends his winky from another piranosaur, but instead is killed himself. The leader starts a campaign to wipe out the piranosaurs, but it becomes evident the balance was disrupted in the action. Soon, the winky population becomes aggressive, wiping out the colonists.
