Zakul the Great

Spurs Jackson, Hank Roper, and Strong Bow return to Mars. Queen Thula instructs them to not remove their helmets, because the atmosphere has been diminishing, and is now too thin for them to breath. Through investigation, Jackson and crew discover that someone is suctioning off the atmosphere, condensing it into liquid, and storing it, and that someone is Zakul the Great, working from his lair on the Martian moon Phobos. Zakul’s henchmen capture Jackson and the Vigilantes. When Queen Thula leaves to find a breathable planet, a hireling of the Chief Scientist, in cahoots with Zakul, spreads the deceitful rumor that the Queen has abandoned the capital. Zakul orders missiles to destroy the city, and sends a bomb to destroy Thula’s ship, but she escapes unharmed because the Vigilantes had replaced the explosives with liquid air. The Vigilantes escape, confront Zakul, and their smaller but more maneuverable ship defeats Zakul’s forces. The atmosphere of Mars is restored.
