Articles Notes Towards a Future Understanding of Wally Wood – The Comics Journal Wally Wood – Wikipedia |
Wallace Allen “Wally” Wood entered comics in 1948 as a letterer and background artist for romance comics but soon centered on his passion, science fiction art, sometimes in collaboration with the artist Joe Orlando, working for Avon comics and eventually for EC’s Weird Science and Weird Fantasy. His work instantly stood out because of his intense attention to detail, particularly in his depictions of the inner machine workings of spaceships; sexy, voluptuous blonde women; and pulsating, oozing space monsters. Beginning in 1952, Wood’s artwork literally exploded off the pages of editor Harvey Kurtzman’s new subversive humor comic book Mad, and along with Will Elder and Jack Davis, he became one of its main contributors, creating the art for the ultimate Superman send-up “Superduperman”. ~ Drew Friedman’s Heroes of the Comics: Portraits of the Legends of Comic Books – Fantagraphics (2014)
