Strong Bow has Hank Roper drive him out to the old adobe dwellings of his ancestors, to attend a ritual. As Hank surmises, the ritual is related to the eclipse that day. Strong Bow relays the story of how, hundreds of years prior, Aztecs called themselves Fire Gods. They say they left Mexico because of white invaders. The Aztecs took over a village and built strange skyships from diagrams in the Popul Vuh. Roper suggests the tribe gathers for the ritual in hopes of the Aztecs’ return, so they can fly away with them. Strong Bow says they are trying to keep the Aztecs from returning. Strong Bow participates in the ritual of shooting arrows into the sky. The arrows from the bowmen strike the spaceship of returning Aztecs. Alighting from the craft, the Aztec leader says, “We are descendants of the Aztec Fire Gods! We have returned with weapons that will destroy the white strangers! Your silly ceremony cannot stop us!” Reassuring the tribal member Laughing Frog, Strong Bow rushes off to find Roper to bring help, but the Aztecs capture him. Roper sets out for assistance. An Aztec archer fires a “Sunburst Arrow” over Roper’s Jeep, which turns into a streak of flame and bursts like a bomb. The Aztec archer lets Roper go, and imprisons Strong Bow. Strong Bow escapes and disguises himself as an Aztec. US tanks arrive. The Aztec charge the army machines. Strong Bow knocks out two Aztec and frees prisoners. They retreat into a cave. When the Aztecs follow, they freeze in their tracks, defeated.
