Protector Karnock rules the planet Sirion at the “rim of the system” while his older brother, King Stephan, battles a five-year war against alien invaders. Unfortunately for Sirion’s populace, Karnock is a ruthless dictator. Karnock intends to have a brutish noble named Ulgar marry King Stephan’s daughter, Princess Valya. The marriage is intended to permit Karnock to ascend the throne of Sirion. When King Stephan hears of Karnock’s intention to usurp the throne from him, he sends Space Admiral Jon Lasim to investigate matters. Jon soon runs afoul of Karnock, who places a bounty on his head. Lasim also falls in love with Valya. The Space Admiral is hunted for a time by Karnock’s soldiers. Jon defeats Karnock, and King Stephan returns to rule Sirion. Jon Lasim has skills in space-fighter combat, hand-to-hand combat, stealth, spycraft, trained with laser pistols and has developed leadership qualities.
