Tommy Tomahawk was the leader of a squadron of Native American pilots in the South Pacific during World War II called the Cherokee Squadron, known as both fierce fighter pilots and ground commandos, when the need arose. Tommy and his men dressed in warpaint, warbonnets, moccasins, and loincloths. At first, Command ordered them to wear regulation uniforms. After the success of their missions, they were afforded special permission to dress as they liked. Tommy Tomahawk’s sidekick was Red Wing.
