Timothy Slade was a highly patriotic industrial plant worker, inspired by the memory of his brother, a U.S. Marine who died in the Battle of Tarawa. When a group of Nazi saboteurs broke into the plant, he tried to stop them. The nefarious criminals knocked him out, and the leader dipped Slade’s right arm into a vat of molten steel. Slade survived the injury. At the moment the doctors decided to amputate, the Spirit of Lady Liberty took pity, magically animating his hand, making it as functional as the real thing, while still as hard as steel. Slade became the costumed hero known as Steel Fist.
