The goateed, mustachioed Latin-American cartoonist with the wild mane of hair (Spain’s mane is a visual essay in itself in Stern’s documentary, going from jet black, to streaked with gray, to full gray, to sparse and ugly, and then finally a pearly nimbus cloud around his depleted frame) was a ground-breaking artist as one of the leaders of the 1960s-70s Underground Comix movement, a cultural wellspring whose importance to our culture has yet to be fully understood and appreciated. One thing is clear, though: without Spain and his cartooning cohorts, comics today would be very different. Maybe the Revolution wasn’t televised, but it was cartooned … and Spain is one of the select few of his generation who showed us the way. ~ Spain Bag – The Comics Journal
