Harvey Twisto, a contortionist, worked for a traveling circus. He discovered his wife Bella having an affair with Sampson the Strong Man. Twisto tried to strangle him. Bella came to Sampson’s rescue by hitting her husband over the head with a dumbbell. Sampson left, but told his assistant, Jocko, to give Twisto some water. Twisto hurried on stage. When he contorted into the shape of a snail, he wasn’t able to contort back. He learned Sampson had poisoned the water, causing Twisto’s twisted grotesque form. During this ghastly performance, Bob Dickering was in the audience. Dickering later overheard Twisto vow revenge. As the Hangman, Dickering followed Twisto home, where Sampson and Bella were bound up and suffering a “slow” death, slow being the Snail’s modus operandi. Twisto lit a fuse to blow up his own home. The Hangman was able to rescue Bella, but not Sampson or Twisto.
