The Skull was a criminal who framed New York police officer Kip Burland for a crime. Burland was let go from the force, and tries to clear his name by finding the Skull. Burland tracks down the Skull after searching for some time. Burland intercedes in a robbery of a fur store by the Skull and his thugs, and ends up shot eight times and left for dead in the woods. Burland is saved by the Hermit, once a Sheriff in the Old West also made an outlaw by the Skull. The Hermit trains Burland to become the the Black Hood, to clear his name and stop the Skull. Skull goes on a crime spree with the law unable to stop him. He attends the masquerade ball of Barbara Sutton, attended by the richest socialites in the city. He sends messages to his intended victims, and even runs an ad in the paper. This gets Burland’s attention. Burland disguises himself as David Seymon, one of the intended victims. Skull, in disguise as Mrs. Sutton, kills a socialite after stealing her pearls, using a poison that makes her face resemble his. Black Hood sees through the Skull’s disguise after looking over pictures taken at the party, and pushes the Skull into a large vase. Foiled, the Skull is turned over to the authorities. The Hermit warns Black Hood that no jail could hold the Skull for long. The Skull was executed by electric chair and his son, the Son of the Skull, took up his father’s mantle.
