In their first adventure, Sheriff Townley and Hank Roper see a truck being hijacked with supplies headed for the New Pueblo Dam. While Roper unties the drivers, the Sheriff chases the bandits. When Roper catches up, he suggests looking in Painted Gulch, the last known hideaway of the bandits. Townley thinks Roper is “plumb loco,” as they had already canvassed the area. Undaunted, Roper heads out to Painted Gulch. He’s captured by two of the bandits repelling down the cliff face behind him. Other bandits haul Roper up the cliff, where Roper spies a niche in the rock storing their ill-gotten gains. One of the bandits throws a rope down the cliff-face. Townley takes the bait and climbs up. The armed bandits rush him. Townley punches one out while Roper busts loose. A bandit push Townley off the cliff, and Roper throws the Sheriff a rope, entangling and saving him from the deadly fall. Townley climbs back up again. to find Roper knocking out a bandit. When the last remaining bandit comes at Roper from behind with a pistol, Townley kicks the gun out of the bandit’s hand. Roper and Townley tie up all the bandits and lower them down the cliff.
