Professor Evil was originally Professor Live, a genius scientist who died of unknown circumstances. On the night that the ghostly crime fighter the Duke of Darkness resurrected, Professor Evil also rose from his grave, calling himself “Professor Evil… Master of Crime in the near future… Master of the Earth!”. To collect henchmen, he confronted criminals in a jail yard in his invisible form, then transformed to a shadow and bested them in a fight, then broke them out of jail. He sent the criminals to rob police records, but the gang was defeated by the Duke of Darkness, and then assassinated by Professor Evil. The Duke of Darkness finally confronted Professor Evil at another police station, promising to dismember him to keep him from future criminal endeavors.
