Hugh Mason arrives on Mars with Peter Fresno. While Mason is focused on the science, Fresno is seeking profit. They discover an ancient Martian city and a museum. A talking statue in the museum telepathically warns the Earthmen of the red dust that destroyed the planet, and of the Martian knowledge falling into the wrong hands. Fresno knocks out Mason and ties him up. Fresno then uses the machine to evolve himself. He commands Mason to return to Earth as an envoy and announce his plan to become Dictator of the World in three-month’s time. Mason returns to Earth but convinces the military to build a space navy. Mason leads the attack but is rebuffed by Fresno’s robot-manned spacecraft. On the ground, the human forces are battered by Fresno’s robotic army. Three years later, Mason returns by setting off an explosion. The shell-shocked Fresno re-enters the evolution-accelerating machine which this time turns Fresno into a blob of goo.
