Big-game hunter, Earthman Arthur Harris, has traveled to Mars to hunt down Martian Birdmen. Harris has brought the first dog ever seen on Mars, and a Venusian Ptero-Hawk, to assist him in the hunt. The “Mars Patrol” official denies his request to hunt the Martians, who he says are sentient beings. Harris tries to pay $10,000 dollars for the “privilege”, but the officer refuses what he calls “blood money” and says he will do everything in his power to stop Harris, should he continue in his plans. Harris carries on anyway, talking to a man who suggests hunting a particularly wily Birdman named Klegra. Harris goes on a hunt for Klegra, who outwits the Earthman at every turn. The dog is caught in a trap set by Klegra. The Ptero-Hawk is caught by flesh-eating Zoga Bushes, which were about to capture Klegra. Eventually, Klegra tricks Harris into a cave known as “the cave of the thousand-year vapors”. The vapors weaken Harris, and will eventually paralyze him for a thousand years, after which he will die. The Mars Patrol officer comes looking for Harris. He questions Klegra, who tells him Harris came and walked out into the Martian sands. When further questioned, Klegra only replies, “Go with Moga”. This tells the officer the birdman will tell him no more.
