Perhaps a better title for Verne is “Father of Tech-Fi,” of stories that revolve around the fanciful possibilities of technology to harness nature’s powers, to aid human adventure, and to rescue men from terrible perils. One of the blurbs on the Wesleyan edition of The Mighty Orinoco, taken from the New York Times, calls Verne “the Michael Crichton of the nineteenth century,” which I think is very precise, and conveys the same idea. True science fiction, however, began twenty years after the masterpieces of Verne’s youth, and on the other side of the English Channel. ~ Jules Verne: Father of Science Fiction? – The New Atlantis
