Ghost Roman Soldiers

Investigating the murderous Dorset Monster, Doctor Christopher Fenn, with the aid of Wendy, uses the “Devil’s Catalog” to summon three ghosts of Roman soldiers to combat the beast. One ghost is Antonius, the leader. Another remains unidentified. The third soldier is Claudius. Fenn surmises the beast was anciently invoked by Druids to fight the Romans. As beings of supernatural origin, and in this way the same as the monster, the ghosts handily dispatch the creature. However, they turn on Fenn and Wendy. Thinking quickly, Fenn distracts the ghosts by demanding he and Wendy be given sanctuary in a Roman camp until they have had a trial. The Romans quickly confer, convicting Fenn and Wendy, sentencing them to immediate death. In the time it took the Roman ghosts to deliberate, Fenn consulted the Devil’s Catalog and banished them.
