Fred Shaw

Dr. John Wytes relays the story, to his niece, Lillian Wytes, of a strange urn in his possession. While he was living in the jungle and studying voodoo, a man named Clifton Shaw asked for his help. Clifton had received a threatening note signed with a tiger’s paw. Wytes advised Shaw to ignore the threat, but Clifton soon came across what he thought was a black tiger cub, and then a beautiful woman. The woman was Tiger’s Paw, who attacked and killed Clifton. The next day, the commissioner told Wytes that Clifton shouldn’t have died from such slight wounds. The pair suspected poison. The commissioner took Wytes to meet Clifton’s brother, Fred Shaw. Fred introduced Linda Day, his fiance. Fred described how his father lost his life in a similar manner while hunting in India. Later, following the same cat Clifton saw before he died, Wytes found an identical note to the one Clifton received, addressed to Fred. The medical examination revealed the cause of death was indeed poison, a poison found in voodoo rituals. Wytes entered the Shaw’s library. He inspected a book on the Shaw family history, which confirmed a curse placed on one Judge Harold Shaw of Capetown in 1145 after he’d sentenced a woman named Agnes Webb to be hanged for the practice of voodoo. It was she who placed the curse. Tiger’s Paw appeared again, to threaten Wytes for meddling. Wytes tried to follow her, but was sidetracked by Fred’s scream. The commissioner and Wytes arrived at the same time. Fred explained the woman appeared to attack him, but fled when Lillian showed up. With the woman gone and Fred bemoaning the family curse, Wytes goes to his laboratory. He returned and waited for Tiger’s Paw. The cat appeared, followed by Tiger’s Paw. She scratched Wytes, causing troubled breathing. She pursued Fred. They wrestled, and Fred realized Tiger’s Paw really was Agnes Webb. Wytes snuck up behind Tiger’s Paw, restraining her. Wytes told her he created an antidote, leaving her powerless. She faded away. Wytes administered the antidote to Fred. Wytes finished the story by describing the urn as the antidote’s container.
