Elmer the Hunter is a werewolf, hunting Little Red Riding Hood in the Okefenokee Swamps of Georgia. Red’s grandmother is the Old Crone, the Horror Host of the story and a witch to whom Red brings supplies in her basket. On one attempt at Red, Elmer, in werewolf form, is mistaken for a common wolf by Zach Parker, one of Elmer’s hunting partners, and shot. He is found again by Tim Blake, another hunting partner. Elmer in wolf form soon makes another attempt on Red, but is shot by Zach. On Elmer’s third attempt to devour Red, he is shot by Zach again and runs off. Zach’s fate is decided when Red reveals her vampiric nature and kills him. She flies away in the form of a bat. Elmer continues to hunt Red, but only sees the over-sized bat, not realizing it is actually Little Red Riding Hood.
