In 1938 Carl Burgos… began working at the Harry “A” Chesler comics packaging shop as an apprentice, drawing backgrounds and panel borders, and inking other artists’ pencils. Burgos drew his first solo story the following year, an eight-page pirate comic for Star Comics published by Centaur Publications. The art director at Centaur asked Burgos to join him at his new comics packaging shop, Funnies Inc. Funnies’ first sale was to publisher Martin Goodman at Timely Comics, supplying the contents of Marvel Comics #1 (October 1939). Burgos created and drew the character the Human Torch for the issue… Marvel Comics was an instant hit, and the Human Torch was soon given his own solo title, which debuted in 1940, with Burgos handling the scripting and drawing. ~ Drew Friedman’s Heroes of the Comics: Portraits of the Legends of Comic Books – Fantagraphics (2014)
