Captain Satan was a pulp hero who only lasted for 5 issues. He was very much like Phantom Detective, who was a bored rich guy, and all around classy gentleman, who fought crime for kicks. He was also like Doc Savage, particularly in the way he was the leader of a team of assistants. Captain Satan’s Satanic Crew, however, seemed to have a disposability equal to that of the Enterprise’s security officers, in that they tended to die to prove that the situation is serious. The author, William O’Sullivan, is interesting in that he is almost a complete and total question mark even to pulp historians, especially compared to how well documented, say, Walter Gibson or Clark Ashton Smith’s life has been. Very little about him is actually known, and we only have a handful of examples of aviation stories to go by elsewhere.
