Representative Bulletdog
As domesticated animals go, dogs are renowned for their often incredible loyalty to their human owners, so “Undying Loyalty” itself has become a common “Animal Stereotype” attributed to dog characters in fiction. More often than not, the target of this loyalty is a human master, but it can also be to other characters, including equals such as other dogs. One common manifestation of this trope is for a dog to become separated from their master, and either faithfully wait for them to return, no matter how long it takes, or go on a great journey to find them. The trope is also frequently contrasted with the behavior of feline characters, who are not reputed for being particularly loyal. This trope can land in multiple places on the “Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism”. On the upside, this is almost invariably a trait of the “Heroic Dog”, who will risk life and limb to protect others, humans especially. On the flipside, a dog might be depicted as “Too Dumb to Live” by taking their loyalty to the point of foolishness. Closely related to “Loyal Animal Companion”, which is where a human character is constantly accompanied by a loyal pet that is often but not always a dog; ditto “Canine Companion”. Also intersects with the “Angry Guard Dog”, who will furiously protect their home territory no matter what. Compare “Noble Wolf”, another positive stereotype of canids… ~ Canine Loyalty – TV Tropes
