Egyptologist Dr. Barnes comes across a rare book on sorcery, promising to “bring one of those old gods up from wherever he is!” Worried for him, as well as hoping to secure Dr. Barnes’ blessing to marry her sweetheart Vic Marken, Barnes’ niece Grace phones Inspector Ronald Kirk of Scotland Yard to intercede, but Dr. Barnes ignores them. That evening, he performs a spell to summon Anubis. Anubis appears, and gives Barnes a knife. In the morning, Grace Barnes finds her uncle dead from apparent suicide. Kirk investigates, discovering it was an act of murder instead. Using a technique for capturing the last image a retina recorded, Kirk views the killer Anubis. Kirk sends his men to canvas museums and costume shops, and finds an egyptology store rented out “the only Anubis suit in all London!” This leads him back to Marken. Disguising himself in the Anubis costume, Kirk scares Marken into a confession.
