Reed Crandall was a master comics craftsman, clearly influenced by the great illustrators of his youth, including Howard Pyle and N. C. Wyeth. When he first arrived at EC in 1953, he was already a well-respected veteran of the comics business. Like so many other young, eager comics artists, he began his career by working at the Eisner and Iger comics shop in 1940, where his work was packaged to appear in various comic books, among them Doll Man, Hit Comics, and Police Comics, but soon he bgan working directly for Quality Comics. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Crandall returned to Quality and became the main artist on its popular title Blackhawk until Quality ceased operations in 1953. That same year, seeking new employment, he walked through the doors of EC on Lafayette Street. Al Feldstein, who had long admired Crandall’s elegant draftsmanship, instantly hired him and kept him busy for the next three years, mainly on science fiction, crime, and horror comics… ~ Drew Friedman’s Heroes of the Comics: Portraits of the Legends of Comic Books – Fantagraphics (2014)
