Further setting Captain Marvel Jr. apart from Captian Marvel is artist Emmanuel “Mac” Raboy, a veteran of the WPA (Works Progress Administration). Raboy’s fully rendered illustrative style, rich in graceful gestures and shading (with a little touch of Alex Raymond’s “Flash Gordon”) could not have been more at odds with the flat, linear simplicity of C. C. Beck. Comparing the eyes of the two comic book heroes tells the tale: Junior’s pupils pop with photo-realistic exurberance, while the Captain’s arch in their jaunty, single-line squint… There is a palpable sense of dire melancholy [in Captain Marvel Jr. stories] that owes everything to Raboy’s evocative drawings. In all, Raboy drew 280 pages of Captain Marvel Jr. material. From 1946 until his death in 1967, Raboy illustrated the Sunday “Flash Gordon” strip for King Features.
