Victor Pearson, a famous metaphysicist, tells the members of an Adventurers’ Club a story to convince them of the existence of ghosts. Twin brothers Jack and George Wingate attend college together, befriending Pearson, and become immersed in the study of the occult and the supernatural. Jack was steady, reliable, and cleancut, while George was greedy, cunning, and scheming. Jack accepts a research position in Maine. Years later, Pearson visits Jack and George in a mansion in Maine, finding him married to Adriene but blind and disfigured from a failed experiment. At dinner, Pearson witnesses George’s animosity towards his brother. Weeks later, Jack is dead, and Pearson returns to help Adriene. A “groping ghost” attacks first George’s wife Beatrice, who dies, then Adriene and Pearson, and finally George, who goes mad. George attacks Pearson but is interrupted by the ghost, and dies at its hand. It turns out the ghost of Jack attacked everyone because, like in real life, it was blind.
