Ted Harper

Renowned sculptor Ted Harper is offered a house in Swamp Hollow as an art studio, for free. He doesn’t realize the owner is the Devil, who has grown tired of his waning power over mankind. The Devil plans to take over a human body on Earth, and the Devil’s Imps surreptitiously follow their boss to take the body over for themselves. Harper’s girlfriend Wendy is wary, but goes along to help him move. Wendy’s friend Karen tags along, as well. Once there, the Devil puts Harper to sleep using methane gas from the swamp. Wendy and Karen find Harper and get him outside, where he recovers from the gas. The Devil discovers his Imps, and turns himself and them visible. Harper realizes what has been going on and throws a lantern at the Devil, and the trio flee. The methane gas explodes, destroying the house. Harper reveals his intentions to marry Wendy while the Devil and his Imps return to their home, “halfway between Main Street and Perdition”.
