The Ray was reporter Hubert “Happy” Terrill. He was covering a science and technology beat for The New York Star in a high-flying “strato-balloon” tasked with exploring the upper atmosphere. He rode along with the balloon’s inventor Professor Styne. An electrical storm struck them just as Terrill was exiting the main cabin and closing the outer airlock door. The storm’s energy, plus the unfiltered sunlight, gave him super powers, such as the ability to absorb energy from his surroundings, emit it from his body in any form he chose, and propel himself through the air.
