Music Makers of Alderbaran

Lieutenant Commander Bruce Hunter, the commanding officer of the Chicago Space Salvage Yard for spaceships in “the jaded, space-minded world of the twenty-first century”, has been grounded from space travel because of “space radiation sickness”. He tells his paramour, prominent biologist Joyce Lawrence, that she should travel while he cannot. A wreck comes in from some uncharted region of space near the Red Star Aldebaran. The pilot’s body is petrified, a “figure of pulverized stone”, and the wreck has a recording disc on a player that plays enticing music, which becomes popular to the public. When it’s played back, the music is amazing and hypnotic. It becomes enormously popular. A mission is planned to seek its source near Aldebaran, headed by Joyce. She goes with Captain Jackson. When the Captain plays his violin, he is accosted by a group of mobile, sound-sensitive trees. These are the Music Makers of Alderbaran, the source of the music. Joyce sends a message to the Earth. Bruce takes a crew to rescue her, using sound to drive the creatures away. As they leave, Bruce is happy that Joyce retrieved full recordings of their music.
