When Sandra Cummings asks Dr. Marcus Kemp to attend a Mardi Gras masquerade ball with her, he tries to decline. Her persistence seems to succeed. However, Kemp sends Robot Kemp, a lookalike robot of his own creation, to go in his stead. Robot Kemp wears a cavalier costume. The robot immediately fails at functioning sufficiently out in the world. When a cab driver demands money for the ride, saying he’ll kill the robot if he stiffs him, Robot Kemp takes it as a threat and kills the cab driver. At the masquerade ball, Sandra coaxes him to the terrace for a kiss. The robot misunderstands the word “kiss” as “kill”, another threat, and in self-preservation kills Sandra, expecting to be praised by Dr. Kemp for his survival skills. An angry mob forms and goes after the robot, which they think is human. Robot Kemp returns to Dr. Kemp’s laboratory. He informs Kemp of the angry mob following him. Kemp notices the blood-soaked cape of Robot Kemp’s costume. Kemp smashes his robot to smithereens, burning the remainder and leaving no evidence for the enraged crowd when they arrive. The lynch mob does what lynch mobs do, though, and hang Kemp from a nearby lamppost.
