Joan Farwell was the fiancée of Bruce Carter III, a.k.a The Fighting Yank. Joan assisted him in some capacity or another in virtually all of his appearances. Unike many other Golden Age love interests, she was more than capable of holding her own in a fight. She was also a skilled aviator who was good with a gun. Joan stands out when compared to most other characters of her type by figuring out that Bruce was the Fighting Yank the first time she saw him in costume. As she pointed out, his domino mask may have been enough of a disguise to fool strangers, but it certainly wasn’t enough to fool someone who knew him as well as she did. In Fighting Yank #2, she briefly becomes a creature made of pure lightning, the Lightning Woman.
