Chonga appeared to be a just a very large gorilla that was kept in a city zoo. A married couple, Ralph and Lorna, moved into an apartment near the zoo and visited. Lorna was fascinated by Chonga and listened to the zookeeper’s passionate description of the superior nature of the gorilla. Ralph quickly got bored with the talk and convinced Lorna they should go elsewhere in the zoo. Lorna spent the next day at the park while her husband was at work, just looking at the gorilla. Late at night, Lorna was compelled by a hypnotic trance to leave her apartment. Her husband Ralph followed, taking his handgun with him. Lorna entered the zoo’s monkey house, and went down to a secret cavern in the basement. Chonga was there, seated on a throne with a troop of gorillas around him, like a king at court. The zookeeper was there as well, serving as Chonga’s majordomo. The keeper announced Chonga intended to take Lorna as his bride, at which point Ralph made his presence known. Chonga charged at Ralph, but the gorilla was brought down by Ralph’s gun. The enraged zookeeper charged Ralph, as well, and was shot dead. Lorna snapped out of her trance and they left the scene. The couple seemed no worse for wear, except for the bruises on Lorna’s arm, in the shape of a gorilla’s fingers. Chonga appeared to have some kind of hypnotic powers over Lorna, possibly the zookeeper, and the other gorillas.
