Anthony Conrad was separated from his father, Dr. John Conrad, while on an Arctic expedition and fell through the ice. On awakening, a doctor informs Anthony that he is in the King of Arctica’s castle. When they speak, the king tells Anthony that he, too, was an Arctic explorer who fell through the ice and landed in the underground kingdom, a land of dense forests, strange creatures, and a medieval civilization. The old king taught the people how to make weapons and build houses, but he needs a successor and chooses Anthony. Anthony accepts because there is no way to return home. However, to become king, Anthony must prove himself by completing three tasks: defeat a giant in wrestling, slay a fearsome dragon-like beast called a Tyros, and defeat the best archer in the kingdom in a duel. He passes all tests with flying colors and is then crowned King Anthony.
